1. What is the corporate tax in Slovenia?
A company registered in Slovenia has to pay a corporate income tax of 20%. There are also cases when investment funds, pension funds and insurance undertakings for pension plans are exempt from the corporate tax.
2. What is the VAT in Slovenia?
The standard Slovenian VAT rate is 20%, with a reduced VAT rate of 8.5% for some goods and services.
3. How can the VAT be refunded in Slovenia?
In order to claim for the VAT refund in Slovenia, you can submit an application on the tax portal by electronic means. The application cannot cover less than three consecutive months or more than one year in order to be considered eligible for refund. Moreover, you should apply only if you claim for refund on a sum that exceeds 400 EUR. The application should be submitted in Slovene or English, not later than 30th September.
4. What is the dividend tax in Slovenia?
For a Slovene company, a 15% dividend tax rate is levied on dividends paid to nonresidents. Of course, there are always exceptions of reduced dividend tax as a result of tax treaties.
5. Are there any incentives for foreign investors in Slovenia?
Slovenia encourages foreign investment and provides several financial incentives for investors. First of all, a company that offers jobs for people younger than 26 and older than 55 years old, who haven’t been working in the last 24 months, benefits from a tax relief of 45% in salary payments. Secondly, there are also incentives for those who hire disabled persons. Last but not least, a company can request a tax reduction if it invests in humanitarian activities, medical, charities, educational, scientific, cultural or religious activities.
6. Why do I need a local accountant for my business in Slovenia?
A company that is set up in Slovenia usually needs a local accountant that can deal in an efficient way with the Slovenian Accounting Standards that expect financial statements every year. Besides, experience in Slovenian accounting will make a specialized person deal with any problems that may arise.
