Paying Taxes in Slovenia

1. What is the corporate tax in Slovenia?

A company registered in Slovenia has to pay a corporate income tax of 18%. There is also a schedule for the corporate tax to be decreased to 17% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 15% to 2015.


2. What is the VAT in Slovenia?

The standard Slovenian VAT rate is 20%, with a reduced VAT rate of 8.5% for some goods and services( foodstuffs; seeds; plants live animals; medicines and medical equipment; transport of passengers; hairdressing services; books; water supplies; admission fees; royalties for writers and performers; certain works of art; certain residential properties; hotel accommodation; use of sports facilities; burial and cremation services; public hygiene services; minor repairs of bicycles, shoes and clothing; domestic care services).

3. How can the VAT be refunded in Slovenia?

In order to claim for the VAT refund in Slovenia, if you are an EU member, you can submit an application on the tax portal by electronic means. The application cannot cover less than three consecutive months or more than one year in order to be considered eligible for refund. Moreover, you should apply only if you claim for refund on a sum that exceeds 400 EUR in case of a period smaller than one year and higher than three months and 50 EUR if the period for which is requested the claim is one year. In case you are not an EU member, the application for refund must be deposited electronically through the VAT portal, along with the original invoices, import documents, a statement that the claimant haven’t performed activities on the Slovenian territory that requires VAT and a Certificate of VAT which proves that the company is already taxed abroad. The period covered by these requests cannot be shorter than six consecutive months and not higher than one year.

4. What is the dividend tax in Slovenia?

For a Slovene company, a 15% dividend tax rate is levied on dividends paid to nonresidents. Of course, there are always exceptions of reduced dividend tax as a result of tax treaties.

5. What are the taxes rates applied on other payments?

In Slovenia, the interests and royalties paid to nonresidents are taxed with 15%, while the technical service fees are taxed with 15%. There is no branch remittance tax imposed in Slovenia. The withholding taxes may be reduced by the provisions of the treaties signed by Slovenia all over the years.

6. Are there any incentives for foreign investors in Slovenia?

Slovenia encourages foreign investment and provides several financial incentives for investors. First of all, a company that offers jobs for people younger than 26 and older than 55 years old, who haven’t been working in the last 24 months, benefits from a tax relief of 45% in salary payments. Secondly, there are also incentives for those who hire disabled persons. Last but not least, a company can request a tax reduction if it invests in humanitarian activities, medical, charities, educational, scientific, cultural or religious activities.
