A lawyer in Denmark is mainly a legal adviser. Lawyers in Denmark are subject to a Code of Conduct issued by the Minister of Justice and they are also supervised by the Consumer Ombudsman. The Code of Conduct is not only a guide to lawyers in Denmark and their clients, but also a contribution to the Disciplinary Board’s prescriptions. All Danish lawyers must be members of the Danish Bar and Law Society which was founded in 1919. An attorney in Denmark must inform his client about the price of legal advice and he must not receive trust property.  The Danish Association of lawyers and economists is the largest trade union in Denmark and includes students and employees in the fields of law, administration, research, education, economics or politics. FAAF is the association of employed lawyers and trainee attorneys in Denmark, with 900 members working in private practice. At the moment, there are approximately 4,000 practicing lawyers in Denmark.

Admission

The rules for admission in the legal profession in Denmark are stipulated in the Administration of Justice Act. An applicant for becoming an attorney in Denmark must obtain a Danish law degree, achieved after a three-year bachelor degree and a two-year master degree in law. Moreover, a candidate to the title of lawyer in Denmark must perform three years of practical legal work under the supervision of a practicing lawyer. It is compulsory that future lawyers attend a postgraduate education course and pass a final exam. After completing these requirements, the candidate must file an application with the Ministry of Justice in order to obtain a license to practice as a lawyer in Denmark.

Forms of practice

Lawyers in Denmark may choose to work as in-house lawyers or private practitioners. In-house lawyers in Denmark may choose to become members of the association of in-house legal advisors. In-house lawyers in Denmark have the same legal status as other lawyers in terms of the code of conduct, professional secrecy, confidentiality or legal privilege.
