A Spanish accountant is called a Contable or an Asesor Fiscal. They are usually hored every month by companies to complete statutory declarations, pay taxes and pay social security, as well as completing the procedures of employment for new staff. There is also another type of accountant in Spain, known as an Economista. This Spanish accountant deals with the analysis of businesses in financial terms. The regulatory body of accountants in Spain is the Insituto de Auditores-Censores Jurados de Cuentas de Espana, but Spanish accountants also have to submit to the European law stipulated in the International Accounting Standards. Also, the Accounting Board decides together with the Accounting Committee on accounting problems.
Admission
In order to become an accountant in Spain, one must be older than 18 and be a national of Spain or of a EU member state. The candidate for an accountant in Spain may not have a criminal record for fraud related offenses. He must have the authorisation from the Institute of Accounting and Accounts Auditing, provided that he has completed an official university degree, has gone through theoretical training courses, has acquired practical training and has passed the exam organised and recognised by the state. According to the International Standards on Auditing, any accountant in Spain must continuously educate himself.
Activities
Since the Spanish rules for accounting must be followed by all companies in Spain, there is always the need of Spanish accountants on the job market. A Spanish accountant prepares the annual accounts and registers them with the provincial mercantile registry within six months after the end of the fiscal year. Besides, an accountant in Spain also deals with bookkeeping, preparation of Spanish tax returns, company formation, registration of new companies with tax authorities. In addition to that, a Spanish accountant is good at tax planning, translation of financial documents and offering advice regarding the incorporation of a Spanish company.
