Accountants in Luxembourg can perform their activity as individuals or as legal entities. Authorised accountants in Luxembourg are registered with the “Ordre des experts-comptables” (OEC), which supervises the activity and the responsibilities of its members. The profession of accountant in Luxembourg is under the Law of 10 June 1999. Luxembourg accountants are by definition meant to deal with all financial information in the accountancy field. Although accountants in Luxembourg used to work in public practice, they are now oriented to private companies, financial industries, administration and government bodies. Their job was to mainly keep accounts and offer financial advice, but nowadays, their activities are more complex and they can have more responsibilities as part of their profession.
Admission
In order to become an accountant in Luxembourg, one must meet some entry requirements, related to the type of qualification they aspire to. There are several titles that are recognised in Luxembourg, such as chartered accountant, chartered certified accountant, certified public accountant, certified general accountant, certified management accountant or certified practicing accountant. In Luxembourg, a graduate is qualified as a chartered accountant if they obtain a certificate after passing an aptitude test based on Luxembourg tax law, Luxembourg commercial law, company accounts, Luxembourg employment and social security law and the professional code of conduct for chartered accountants in Luxembourg.
Activities
Besides managing accounts, an accountant in Luxembourg has to organise and correct financial statements, prepare balance sheets and analyze all financial and organisational matters of the company he works for. In addition to that, an accountant in Luxembourg has to submit the annual account of the company to the Trade and Companies Register and record it in the Memorial of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A qualified accountant in Luxembourg can extend his activities to company domiciliation, tax advisor, company audit work, salary calculation, company secretarial services and inspection of contracts. The law stipulates that an accountant also has the obligation to fight against money laundering and terrorism financing.
