An accountant in Austria is known as a Steuerberater if he is a tax advisor or a Wirtschaftsprüfer if he is a certified public accountant in Austria. Other related professions are management accountants, commercial accountants or payroll accountants. Their profession is mainly that of a tax consultant. Accountants in Austria usually work either in accountancy firms or independently. Austrian accountants must not break the rules of the Public Accountants’ Statute of Professional Practice. Most important is that accountants in Austria do not break the law that regulates the accountancy profession. This refers to the Management Accountancy Law or Bilanzbuchhaltungsgesetz from 2006. Another legal foundation for financial accounting is the Austrian Commercial Code.

In order to obtain a position in accounting, a candidate must make proof of having completed a degree or course of study in finance. Generally, employers in Austria prefer the studies in business management or political management degrees. One has the possibility to be hired as an accountant in an Austrian firm before finishing the degree and be promoted after completing his studies. As a matter of fact, no license or certificate is required in order to obtain an accounting position in Austria.
